NotesWisden Cricketer of the Year 1997
Profile
Sachin Tendulkar has been the most wholesome batsman of his time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon as well. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses, anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient in each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will.
Though he has adopted a noticeably conservative approach in the last quarter of his career, there are no apparent weaknesses in Tendulkar's game. He can score all around the wicket, off both front foot and back, and has made runs in all parts of the world in all conditions.
Some of his finest performances have come against Australia, the overwhelmingly dominant team of his era. His century as a 19-year old on a lightning fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in Australia. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman when Don Bradman confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself.
Blessed with the keenest of cricket minds, and armed with a loathing for losing, Tendulkar set about doing what it took to become one of the best batsmen in the world. This was after he was turned away from a fast-bowling camp in Chennai by Dennis Lillee.
Tendulkar's greatness was established early: he was only 16 when he made his made his Test debut. He was hit on the mouth by Waqar Younis but continued to bat, in a blood-soaked shirt. His first Test hundred, a match-saving one at Old Trafford, came when he was 17, and he had 16 Test hundreds before he turned 25. In 2000 he became the first batsman to have scored 50 international hundreds, and he currently holds the record for most hundreds in both Tests and ODIs - remarkable, considering he didn't score his first ODI hundred till his 79th match.
Tendulkar's considerable achievements seem greater still when looked at in the light of the burden of expectations he has had to bear from his adoring but somewhat unreasonable followers, who have been prone to regard anything less than a hundred as a failure. The aura may have dimmed, if only slightly, as the years on the international circuit have taken their toll on the body, but Tendulkar remains, by a distance, the most worshipped cricketer in the world.

Re: Sachin Zone{Updated dialy}
Best ODI innings against Pakistan

118 and 2-40, Sharjah, 1996
Tendulkar's 118 helped India pass 300 for the first time in one-day cricket and set up a satisfying win. He added a record 231 for the second wicket with fellow centurion Navjot Singh Sidhu and was intent on building an innings after scoring just three in India's two defeats. It was a classical display, as both fast bowler and slow were played with ease. With the ball, Tendulkar dismissed Basit Ali and Saqlain Mushtag with his mixed bag of flippers, faster ones and topspinners as India won by 28 runs.

89*, Toronto, 1996
The inaugural Sahara `Friendship' Cup in far-off Toronto went off India’s way thanks to Tendulkar's watchful innings. The series made a belated start, after rain prevented any play over the weekend and the opener was reduced 33 overs a side on a surface that was still damp. India's bowling was spot on as they exploited the conditions to dismiss Pakistan for 270. Timing the ball was not easy, but Tendulkar gave impetus to India's chase with a run-a-ball 89, including nine fours and three sixes, and settled the issue by adding 65 in nine overs with Mohammad Azharuddin.

95 and 3-45, Dhaka, 1998
A comfortable victory, with nine overs in hand, gave India a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three finals of the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup. Tendulkar starred again, smashing 95 from 78 balls, with five sixes and six fours. He shared an opening stand of 159 in 25 overs with Sourav Ganguly, and on the way he became the youngest player to pass 6,000 runs in ODI cricket, at 24 years 265 days. Earlier, he had also taken three wickets as no Pakistan batsman got to 40.

98, Centurion, 2003
Tendulkar had been compelled to live this World Cup match against Pakistan for a year in advance. He had not slept properly for 12 nights going into the match. A target of 274 set for India and Tendulkar, bat in hand, showed no anxiety whatsoever. Or was it that nervous energy? He just finished his hyped battle against Shoaib Akhtar in the latter’s first over with an uppercut for six and then a flick and a straight block for two boundaries. Every bowler iwas dealt with similar disdain. He had not looked more pumped up before. And although he missed a special century, he left the match sealed in the 28th over.
141, Rawalpindi, 2004
Tendulkar’s dazzling 141 wasn't enough to inspire India to an improbable victory after they were set 330 to win by Pakistan. Shoaib Akhtar, playing his 100th one-day international in front of his home crowd, winkled out India's lower order as they fell 12 runs short at the finish. As long as Tendulkar was at the crease, India were favourites to pull it off. He batted magnificently, passing 13,000 runs along the way, and adding 105 with Rahul Dravid to set the game. The slow bowlers were cut, swept and paddle-swept deftly, while the pace bowlers were creamed through the covers, and lofted over midwicket with ease. Ironically, it was that shot that proved his downfall, when he slog-swept Shoaib Malik down to Abdul Razzaq at deep midwicket. His 141 took just 135 deliveries, and gave the remaining batsmen the perfect platform to make a charge. Unfortunately, it was not to be but Tendulkar’s knock was unforgettable.

Re: Sachin Zone{Updated dialy}
BEST QUOTES - CRICKET LEGENDS HAIL THE LITTLE MASTER
Sir Don Bradman

I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I feel that this player is playing much the same as I used to play, and she looked at him on Television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two...hi compactness, technique, stroke production... it all seemed to gel! in reference to Sachin Tendulkar.
Sunil Gavaskar

India's fortune will depend on how many runs the little champion scores. There is no doubt Tendulkar is the real thing.
Richie Benaud

He has defined cricket in his fabulous, impeccable manner. He is to batting what Shane Warne is to bowling.

Re: Sachin Zone{Updated dialy}
Sachin is cricket's God!
- Barry Richards
Harder he works, the luckier he gets.
- Ian Chappell
Technically, you can't fault Sachin. Seam or spin, fast or slow nothing is a problem.
- Geoffrey Boycott
He is Sachin Tendulkar. I hope he stays Sachin Tendulkar. We need a new player, a player in his own way. He has a technique which is the hallmark of a great player. Everything indicates that he will be a great player and I am sure he will prove me right. Reminds me of Barry Richards.
- Eddie Barlow
He is a perfectly balanced batsman and knows perfectly well when to attack and when to play defensive cricket. He has developed the ability to treat bowlers all over the world with contempt and can destroy any attack with utmost ease.
- Greg Chappell
I'll be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don't think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just an amazing player.
- Shane Warne
I think he is marvellous. I think he will fit in whatever category of Cricket that has been played or will be played, from the first ball that has ever been bowled to the last ball that’s going to be. He can play in any era and at any level. I would say he’s 99.5% perfect.
- Viv Richards on Sachin Tendulkar
Today, he showed the world why he is considered the best batsman around. Some of the shots he played were simply amazing. Earlier, opposing teams used to feel that Sachin's dismissal meant they could win the game. Today, I feel that the Indian players, too, feel this way.
- Wasim Akram
Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don't know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives.
- BBC Sports, on Sachin Tendulkar
I Was fielding in the covers Tendulkar came out to bat in his debut Test at Karachi. I still remember Waqar Younis was at his peak form at that time. Tendulkar tried to drive Waqar through the covers off his very first ball in Test cricket but was beaten all ends up. But I walked to captain Imran Khan and told him 'this kid looks very good' and Imran agree with me.
- Abdul Qadir
I have watched a lot of Tendulkar and we have spoken to each other a lot. He has it in him to be among the very best.
- Sir Garfield Sobers
Don't bowl him bad balls, he hits the good ones for fours.
- Michael Kasprowicz
If I've to bowl to Sachin, I'll bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard.
- Dennis Lillee
I still think Tendulkar is the best batsmen in the world ahead of Steve Waugh and Lara.
- Glenn McGrath
What we (Zimbabwe) need is 10 Tendulkars.
- Paul Strang
He is Sachin Tendulkar. I hope he stays Sachin Tendulkar. We need a new player, a player in his own way. He has a technique which is the hallmark of a great player. Everything indicates that he will be a great player and I am sure he will prove me right. Reminds me of Barry Richards.
- Eddie Barlow
Sometime back I had written a piece that said that Sachin's the master and Lara a genius with his head high up somewhere. That's it!
- Peter Roebuck
Sachin is an attacker. He has much more power than Sunny. He wants to be the one to set the pace. He has to be on top. That's the buzz about him.
- Jeff Thompson
Tendulkar is the most complete batsman I have stood behind. I saw the hundred in Perth on a bouncy pitch with Hughes, McDermott and Whitney gunning for him he only had 60-odd when No 11 came in. I've seen him against Warne too.
- Ian Healy
Sachin's the best. I've had this view since I saw him score that hundred in Sydney in 1992. He's the most composed batsman I've ever seen.
- Mike Coward
The pressure on me is nothing as compared to Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin, like God, must never fail. The crowd always expects him to succeed and it is too much pressure on him - Mark Waugh
Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal.
- Brain Lara
His life seems to be a stillness in a frantic world... [When he goes out to bat], it is beyond chaos - it is a frantic appeal by a nation to one man. The people see him as a God...
- Mathew Hayden, on Sachin Tendulkar
It was one of the greatest innings I have ever seen. There is no shame being beaten by such a great player, Sachin is perhaps only next to the Don.
- Steve Waugh
You might pitch a ball on the off stump and think you have bowled a good ball and he walks across and hits it for two behind midwicket. His bat looks so heavy but he just waves it around like it's a toothpick.
- Brett Lee, on Sachin Tendulkar’s batting, 1999
- Barry Richards
Harder he works, the luckier he gets.
- Ian Chappell
Technically, you can't fault Sachin. Seam or spin, fast or slow nothing is a problem.

He is Sachin Tendulkar. I hope he stays Sachin Tendulkar. We need a new player, a player in his own way. He has a technique which is the hallmark of a great player. Everything indicates that he will be a great player and I am sure he will prove me right. Reminds me of Barry Richards.
